« Tu connais Anouar Benmalek ? Romancier, journaliste, poète, un des auteurs algériens les plus emblématiques de sa génération.
Né le 16 janvier 1956 à Casablanca d'un père algérien et d'une mère marocaine, il grandit à Constantine et étudie les mathématiques avant de devenir écrivain.
Mathématicien de formation, il est titulaire d'un doctorat d'État en probabilités et statistiques et a enseigné à l'université d'Alger.
Il cofonde, après les émeutes d'octobre 1988, le Comité algérien contre la torture et participe à l'édition du Cahier noir d'octobre, témoignage des tortures commises sur les manifestants.
Benmalek écrit depuis les années 1980 : poésie, essais, nouvelles et romans. Certains de ses livres ont suscité la controverse, voire la haine d'extrémistes, comme Ô Maria ou Le Rapt.
Son œuvre explore l'histoire, la mémoire, la violence, l'amour et la tragédie humaine.
